What to Expect – Newborn Sessions

The ideal time for capturing those snuggly, sleepy images of your precious little one is during the first 5-15 days after your baby is born. For that reason (and to ensure my availability), it is best to schedule your newborn session several months prior to your baby’s anticipated arrival. Advance scheduling also allows for ample time to discuss all of the details of, and your preferences for, your session.

Newborn sessions typically last between two to four hours, as I allow ample time for expected breaks for feeding, diapering, and lulling your baby to sleep. Although some clients prefer to have the session focus exclusively on the new baby, I encourage parents and siblings to be photographed with the baby for at least a few images. (During the pre-session consultation, I provide recommendations with respect to wardrobe choices for all members of the family.)

My absolute highest priority in any newborn session is the safety and comfort of your baby. For that reason, I have participated in numerous workshops devoted to safety in posing and photographing newborns. In addition, in accord with the medical community’s recommendations for individuals working with newborns, I have been vaccinated against pertussis (whooping cough),  influenza, and Covid, and I adhere to the recommended immunization schedule. Finally, I ensure that the temperature and other environmental factors during a session are ideal for your baby, and provide you with other general tips for keeping your little one as happy and comfortable as possible.

Hi all!
Limited opportunity for a D.C.-area family with a newborn. Please share if you know someone who might be interested!
Exciting news!!
Did you know that, in addition to my extensive collection of newborn and baby outfits, I now offer a selection of beautiful dresses (both women’s and girls’) that are available for use during newborn and Mommy & Me sessions?
(As always, I additionally provide styling and wardrobe assistance for all members of the family.)
I know that it can feel overwhelming to choose the perfect outfits for your portrait session (particularly after the arrival of a new baby!). My curated wardrobe of flattering, camera-friendly pieces will help ensure that you look and feel your best, while simultaneously minimizing any stress and time commitment associated with preparing for your session.

I am always looking for ways to simplify the portrait session experience for my clients, and I will be sharing even more details soon!

It’s Fall, it’s Fall!! 🍁🍂
Well, maybe not officially, but the weather has been cooler and amazing, football is back, and pumpkin spice is everywhere, so I am declaring it Fall. Who is with me?

So I did a little experiment…
As you all know, I am a big proponent of printing your images, rather than having them live on a computer or phone…those beautiful photos of the most precious people in your lives deserve to be displayed and appreciated in your home!
The two principal reasons that I offer fine art prints (including matted and custom framed prints) for purchase by my clients are (1) convenience for my clients, and (2) QUALITY.
The professional labs that I use for printing utilize color calibration profiles and the highest quality papers and inks that are designed for durability and longevity.
Out of curiosity, I printed the same image at my professional lab, and also at Walgreens and CVS.
Top print: CVS
Middle print: my professional lab
Bottom print: Walgreens
Apart from physical properties of the prints themselves (my lab’s fine art prints are printed on thick, 100% cotton paper), you can see that there is a pretty significant color/brightness disparity in the photos. The top print is rather dark, and the skin tones have an orange hue; the bottom print has overall gray/green tones.
What do you all think? Would you like to see a print comparison with another image?

It’s been a little quiet on my page for the last week or so…we took our first-born back to college (hugs to all you mamas sending your babies off to school, particularly to kindergarten or freshman year of college!), and then spent some wonderful time up north with family and friends.
But now it’s back to work, and I’m gearing up for all the Fall/Winter sessions! My openings in the Fall get snatched up pretty quickly, so don’t hesitate to get in touch if you would like to schedule a session!
